Hiking and camping have been features of KIS, taking advantage of this location at 2200 m in the Palani Hills since its inception in 1991. This is one thing alumni always remember about this school. The best of Kodai and the Palani Hills, the views, waterfalls, wildlife and jungles are all beyond the confines of the school campus and town. Hiking also provides a break from the community, good exercise and a change of pace. There are hikes ranked A, B, C, and D, according to length and difficulty. Some hikes are down paths to the plains and back. Those completing a specified target are awarded a Thar pin.
The camping program of the Kodaikanal International School is designed to give the students the opportunity to explore the wilderness and natural beauty of the Western Ghats at 0ur 100 Acre off campus property (Poondi camp) which is 42 KM away from Kodaikanal tucked away in a remote corner of the Palini hills near a village called Poondi. All students from grades 3 to 12 at K.I.S participate in the program and spend 2 days and night at our wilderness campus.
At camp students enjoy rafting, canoeing, swimming, archery, zip line, and climbing facilities. They also go on walks play informal games that they come up with and in the evenings sit around the fire and sing or just spend time together as a class. The camps are on weekends from Friday to Sunday. It has been an enriching program for both teachers and students and is looked forward to by students at K.I.S.
