Scholarships

The Atur Foundation Scholarship for Excellence is presented to a deserving Indian National student residing in India, who wishes to enter Grade 9 or 11 at KIS. This scholarship seeks an individual who demonstrate significant financial need, excel academically, exhibit outstanding personal character, and show determination and perseverance in overcoming challenges, alongside a strong will to succeed.

This scholarship has been made possible due to the generous contribution from the Atur Foundation Charitable Trust, which was founded by Mr. Atur Sangtani, with one of its objectives being to promote education amongst the youth of the future.

Mr. Atur Sangtani was a businessman and philanthropist, who strongly believed that education is vital in order to foster a better future for our youth. He was actively involved in many educational institutions in Pune; amongst these was the renowned Symbiosis University, where he was the Founder President. Mr Sangtani started the 'Atur Foundation' with the sole purpose of donating funds towards the economically disadvantaged. Today, his family continue to run the foundation and uphold his philanthropic legacy, passion for education and commitment to nurturing the potential of future generations.

Criterion for granting the Atur Foundation Scholarship for Excellence

• The scholarship will be granted to an Indian national residing in India and seeking an admission at KIS in grade 9 or 11.
• The applicant should demonstrate a substantial financial need (i.e., family income that is not sufficient to cover all education-related expenses at KIS).
• Applicants should excel academically and exhibit outstanding personal character. The recipient will need to maintain a grade-point average (GPA) above 3.6.
• Applicants should exhibit determination and perseverance in the face of challenges and should possess a strong will to succeed
• Applicants must pursue the full IBDP programme at KIS

Amount Awarded

• This two/four-year scholarship covers the full tuition and development fees for a student entering in Grade 9 or 11, supporting them until graduation.

The Atur Foundation Scholarship for Excellence Application Form

The KIS STEM Scholarship for Women is awarded to a young woman entering KIS in Grade 11 with demonstrated academic excellence; an ambition to pursue studies and a career in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math with a commitment to serve her community.

The KIS STEM Scholarship for Women was originally initiated in 2021 by KIS Alumna Ms. Anuja Master Bose in memory of her mother Dr. Kunjlata Kothary Master, who was a talented and motivated trailblazer in the field of Science. Ms. Anuja Master Bose graduated from KIS in 1989 and served on the KIS Board of Council Members, deeply involved in the development of the School and supporting its mission and vision.

In 2023, this Scholarship has been made possible due to the generous contributions of Ms. Anita Khaldy, KIS Alumna (Class of 1982) in honor of her parents Mr. Sam Alphonso and Mrs. Rita Alphonso. This award is given to a deserving woman, who wishes to pursue her career in the STEM fields. 

Criterion for granting the KIS STEM Scholarship

• The scholarship will be granted to a female student entering KIS in Grade 11.

• Preference will be given to applicants with a family income that is not sufficient to cover all education-related expenses at KIS.

• Applicants should demonstrate a desire to pursue studies/career in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math.

• Applicants should excel academically and exhibit outstanding personal character. The recipient will need to maintain a Grade Point Average (GPA) above 3.75.

• Applicants should exhibit determination and perseverance in the face of challenges and should possess a strong will to succeed.

• The application is open to all eligible female students from any country, culture, or religion.

Amount Awarded

• The award will provide a scholarship of USD 10,000 to a Grade 11 student for each year of their study at KIS in the Diploma Programme.

The SEAR Scholarship is presented annually to two deserving students from the Southeast Asian region, initially being granted to students of Burmese origin entering Grade 11 at KIS. These students are recognized for their exceptional personal character, outstanding academic achievements, and unwavering determination to overcome challenges. The scholarship seeks individuals who not only strive for personal success but also demonstrate a profound commitment to making a positive impact on their communities.

This scholarship has been initiated by KIS Alumna Ms. Maureen Aung-Thwin (’66) in loving memory of her mother, Margaret Aung-Thwin, a dedicated educator and former KIS faculty member. It embodies the spirit of perseverance, academic excellence, and commitment to community values that Mrs. Aung-Thwin exemplified throughout her life.

Margaret Aung-Thwin's legacy as an educator and translator is deeply ingrained in the SEAR Scholarship. Her multifaceted career spanned various countries and cultures, reflecting a life dedicated to education and cultural exchange. She was the first of fourteen children born to John F. Hodgson and Naw Thet Po, and she pursued her education with a BA and B.Ed from Judson College in Rangoon and an M.A. from SUNY Cortland. A Fulbright Exchange Scholar, she taught in various international settings, including schools in Rangoon, Kodaikanal, and Cornell University, and led adult education programs for the Miccosukee Native American community in Florida. Her significant contribution to Burmese literature, particularly through her translation of Ma Ma Lay's "Not Out of Hate," highlights her dedication to bridging cultural divides through education.

This scholarship is not merely a financial grant; it is an invitation to join a community that values educational excellence, cultural understanding, and a commitment to improving the world. It is a tribute to the enduring impact of a remarkable educator and a testament to the power of education to change lives.

Criterion for granting the KIS SEAR Scholarship

• The scholarship will be granted to a Burmese origin residing in Myanmar or outside and is seeking an admission at KIS in grade 11.
• The applicant should demonstrate a strong financial need (i.e., family income that is not sufficient to cover all education-related expenses at KIS).
• Applicants should excel academically and exhibit outstanding personal character. The recipient will need to maintain a grade-point average (GPA) above 3.3.
• Applicants should exhibit determination and perseverance in the face of challenges and should possess a strong will to succeed.
• “Concern for Others” is a key KIS value. Applicant must not be involved in activity that affects the peace, decorum or democracy in their host country.

Amount Awarded

• This scholarship is a two-year grant covering full tuition and development fees for two students incoming in Grade 11 until graduation.

The KIS Art Scholarship is specifically tailored for a student with a profound passion for Visual Arts who wished to join KIS in grade 11. This scholarship is designed to honor and recognize the exceptional talent and dedication of a student pursuing excellence in Art while studying at KIS. It serves not only as a financial support but also as an encouragement for students intending to further their education in Visual Arts at the undergraduate level.

This scholarship is founded in loving memory of Eleanor Banner Bilimoria by her daughter, Ms. Katherine Wilcox, a proud alumna from the Class of 1961. Eleanor Banner Bilimoria, an Art teacher at KIS during the 1950s, left an indelible mark on the community with her passion for teaching and her dedication to nurturing creativity among her students. Through this scholarship, her legacy continues to inspire and shape future generations of artists at KIS.

Criterion for granting the KIS Art Scholarship

• The scholarship will be granted to a Grade 11 student with a passion for Visual Arts
• The student must undertake Visual Arts as a Higher-Level subject for Grade 11-12 IBDP program
• The student must present a strong intent to pursue Art as a major for their undergraduate study
• Preference will be given to applicants with a family income that is not sufficient to cover all education-related expenses at KIS.

Amount Awarded

• This scholarship is an award of INR 6,50,000 each year only towards annual tuition fees for a student entering KIS in 11, supporting them until graduation.

Russell De Valois graduated from KIS in 1943 and he went on to earn his PhD in Physiological Psychology from the University of Michigan. He joined the faculty at Indiana University in Bloomington where his work on color vision became widely known. He was a brilliant scientist who taught at the University of California in Berkeley and conducted pioneering research on vision and how spatial information is analyzed by the brain.

Russell died on September 20, 2003 as a result of a car accident that occurred during his return to California from the 60th anniversary reunion of his KIS graduation.

KIS proudly launched the Russell De Valois Scholarship through an endowment fund established by Russells’s High School classmates (KIS Class of 1943). The scholarship program is aimed to attract a student who is likely to excel academically and one who can contribute to public service, artistic or athletic life of the school. Applicant must be an Indian citizen with eligibility independent of gender and religion. The applicant must show a will to succeed, critical thinking ability, leadership skills and perseverance in the face of challenges.

The scholarship is offered once in every two years to a student entering Grade 11 for the duration of their study at KIS to graduation at the end of Grade 12. The scholarship will be offered next for the academic year beginning July 2021.

The Excellence in Education Scholarship, similar to the Russell De Valois Scholarship, is offered once in every two years to a student entering Grade 11 for the duration of their study at KIS to graduation at the end of Grade 12.

Criterion for granting the Excellence in Education Scholarship

• Preference will be given to applicants with a family income that is not sufficient to cover all education related expenses at KIS.

• Applicants should excel academically and have an outstanding character. The candidate should contribute to the public service, artistic and / or athletic life of the school.

• Applicants must show a will to succeed, determination and perseverance in the face of challenges; leadership and public service and participation in volunteer, community, and school-related activities and critical thinking ability.

• The application is open to any citizen with eligibility, independent of gender and religion.

Amount awarded

• Full KIS tuition and boarding charges at the rate charged by KIS for up to two years.
