Communications and Design Manager

Job Title: Communications and Design Manager (Part-Time, 20 hrs/week)
 
Location: Remote (with occasional travel to Kodaikanal)
 
Organization: Kodaikanal International School – Center for Environment and Humanity (CEH)
 
Duration: Initial contract of 11 months, renewable. Potential to transition into a full-time role as scope expands.
 
About the Kodaikanal International School Center for Environment and Humanity (CEH)
The Center for Environment and Humanity (CEH) is based at Kodaikanal International School. We work at the intersection of environment, community, and education in the fragile ecosystem of the Western Ghats. Through place-based learning, community-led conservation, and youth engagement, we aim to build a more just and sustainable future. Our work spans four key areas: biodiversity conservation, waste management, climate change, and sustainable agriculture. CEH programs bring together students, scientists, artists, Indigenous leaders, and local communities to deepen understanding of local environmental challenges and co-create solutions rooted in respect, knowledge, and action.
 
About the Communications and Design Function at CEH
The Communications and Design function at CEH supports all of our environmental programs and partnerships by developing compelling content, strengthening our visual identity, and implementing outreach strategies that reflect our mission. This role is critical to increasing visibility, deepening donor engagement, and building institutional reputation in the education and environment sectors. Position Summary We are looking for a skilled and versatile communications professional who brings strong storytelling, strategic thinking, and visual communication skills. The role involves planning and executing content and campaigns that showcase CEH’s impact, engage diverse stakeholders, and support our fundraising and partnership goals. The position will start part-time (20 hours/week) with the potential to expand into a full-time role as the organization’s needs grow.
 
Responsibilities 
 
  • Creating and implementing an annual communications plan for social media, website updates, newsletters, and email campaigns
  • Managing CEH’s digital presence across Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn with consistent content that communicates our work and values
  • Producing and coordinating newsletters and email updates for donors, partners, and institutional stakeholders
  • Keeping CEH’s website updated with new programs, stories, and impact reports
  • Supporting internal communications, including documentation and team updates
  • Coordinating with program staff and students to gather field stories, photos, and other content
  • Supporting communications for public events, workshops, and campaigns
  • Tracking engagement metrics across platforms and providing monthly analytics reports
  • Contributing to the development of donor decks, reports, and other outreach materials
  • Providing design support (e.g., social media templates, simple infographics, flyers)
  • Participating in CEH team meetings and planning sessions as needed

Qualifications

  • A strong storyteller with the ability to translate complex ideas, field activities, and program outcomes into engaging, accessible narratives
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in communications, journalism, design, marketing, or a related field
  • 5+ years of relevant experience, preferably in the non-profit or social impact sector
  • Excellent writing skills in English, with a clear, warm, and persuasive tone
  • Demonstrated experience creating compelling content for social media, newsletters, websites, and donor communications
  • Proficiency in tools such as Canva, Salesforce, Hubspot, Meta Business Suite, and Google Workspace
  • Familiarity with audience segmentation, communications planning, and analytics
  • Basic graphic design skills and an eye for layout and aesthetics
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Interest in environmental, educational, or sustainability work is strongly preferred

Structure and Reporting

This is a contractual position. The Communications and Design Manager will report to the Head of the KIS Center for Environment and Humanity and work closely with the KIS Marketing Director, KIS Chief Marketing Officer, and program staff to develop and implement communications strategies.
