The Dr. Kunjlata Kothary Master Scholarship is awarded to a young woman entering KIS in Grade 11 with demonstrated academic excellence; an ambition to pursue studies and a career in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, or Math (a woman with STEAM!); and a commitment to serve her community.
Throughout her life, Dr. Kothary Master was a talented and motivated trailblazer. She grew up in Bombay at a time when opportunities for studies and careers in advanced science for women were limited. As she progressed from high school to college she was often one of a few women in each class. In graduate school she was the only woman in her class. In the late 1950s, Dr. Kothary Master left India for London to pursue her PhD in Biochemistry. She then moved to the US and became one of a small number of women to run her own lab at the University of Chicago.
After these remarkable achievements, Dr. Kothary Master’s life changed dramatically. She was incapacitated by a debilitating disease that forced her to give up her bright future in scientific research. However, the same perseverance and fortitude that defined her early success helped her to walk again, talk again, and even publish a book. She continued to contribute to civic life in many ways. She started a small library of South Asian literature for the immigrant community in Chicago, participated in the women’s rights movement, and took responsibility for regularly corresponding with elected officials.
Dr. Kothary Master always believed that an excellent education, hard work, and clear goals could lead to a purposeful life. This scholarship is in honor of Dr. Kothary Master’s scientific achievements and to her grit and optimism that allowed her to overcome barriers and thrive.
This scholarship is a two-year grant covering 50% of school fees in grades 11 and 12.
