Talks & Workshops

If you've spent time in the Western Ghats, chances are you've come face to face with the magnificent gaur, known informally as the Indian bison. The question on all of our minds: How can humans and gaur co-exist, as the gaur population in these hills expands and spills out from the forest into urban settlements?

This Earth Day, we examine 'The Curious Case of Kodai's Kaatu Maadus' in a special lecture by CEH's director, Farshid Ahrestani. A leading expert on the gaur, he will look at the status quo in Kodaikanal and beyond, today - and field questions during an interactive discussion.

About our speaker: CEH Director Farshid Ahrestani is an authority on large herbivore ecology and a leading authority on the gaur, the world's largest bovid species. A teacher, software engineer and research ecologist with 30 years of experience in the US, he spent a decade in academia as a researcher at Columbia University, Pennsylvania State University, The Institute of Bird Populations and as a Fulbright Scholar. He is passionate about contributing to the betterment of the Palani Hills, after growing up in Madurai, and helped assess wildlife habitat in the Palani Hills in the 1990s.
