"My group at IISER Tirupati has worked on the Shola Sky Island birds for a few decades now. These isolated mountain habitats are home to species found nowhere else in the world and serve as natural laboratories to study various biological phenomena - how and why do some species live on these mountains? How does climate change impact their populations?
The field station run in collaboration with KIS-CEH and IISER Tirupati enables close, long-term observation of these endemic species—like the Sholakili—in both wild and lightly human-modified habitats. This proximity allows us to study bird behavior, bird songs, and ecological adaptations in detail.
Through our time here, we've understood species biology and landscape change using remote sensing. Some of this research from the Kodaikanal Field Station contributed to High Court recommendations for invasive species removal and habitat restoration in the Western Ghats."

"The partnership with CEH has been transformational for students from the School of Global Public Health, New York University, (New York). This unique Kodai experience for public health students was instrumental in making them advocates for change to build stronger, more resilient communities. It has given students a renewed appreciation of the importance of biodiversity and the climate crisis, while simultaneously leading to personal growth and giving them a sense of purpose and confidence to work and thrive in global settings as public health professionals. We are grateful to KIS CEH for extending this opportunity." Dr. Niytai Parekh
Professor of Public Health Nutrition
New York Univesrity

"The CEH experience highlighted the importance of a community-centered mindset when approaching complex global public health issues. At the forefront of CEH’s approach was empathy, adaptability, and local collaboration—leaving a lasting impression on my approach to problem-solving and addressing future public health challenges."

Climate Change in India's Palani Hills
Visiting students interviewed over 100 farmers to understand local climate change adaptation strategies. Read about our findings in the Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre’s South Asia Climate Knowledge Hub, in an article on hill communities and climate change by Rajni George (KIS, Class of '99)
Our Legacy of School and University Partnerships
We've proudly partnered with schools and universities around the world to design meaningful, hands-on learning and research experiences. These collaborations have broadened students’ perspectives and led to tangible impact in both our communities and theirs.
