Our Focus Areas
We don’t just identify problems — we create solutions that matter.
1. Waste Management
The challenge
Kodaikanal struggles with a growing waste crisis. Open dumps pollute forests and water bodies, threaten public health, and discourage tourism.
What we do
We empower communities to take ownership of their environment by:
- Teaching households, schools, and businesses to sort waste effectively.
- Creating systems to process organic waste at the local level.
- Establishing recycling drop-off facilities and secondary sorting stations.
- Promoting alternatives to single-use plastics and celebrating sustainable practices with local awards.
Impact
Over 20 tons of waste generated in Kodaikanal is processed by CEH annually, minimizing our impact on the local landfill. Communities and businesses are adopting zero-waste practices, transforming the way Kodaikanal manages its resources.

2. Sustainable Agriculture
The challenge
Conventional farming in the Palani Hills relies heavily on chemicals, degrading soil and water quality. Farmers face limited access to organic methods, while rapid agricultural expansion threatens biodiversity.
What we do
We demonstrate and share sustainable farming practices that benefit farmers and the environment. Key initiatives include:
- Piloting solutions like organic pest repellents, biochar, and vermicompost.
- Working closely with farmers to identify challenges and co-develop strategies.
- Promoting practices such as seed banks and composting to improve soil health and water efficiency.
- Identifying market linkages for their produce.
Impact
A growing network of 120 farmers exchanging knowledge, adopting sustainable techniques, and improving their resilience to climate change while protecting the region’s unique biodiversity.

3. Biodiversity Conservation
The challenge
The Palani Hills have lost 80% of their native shola-grassland mosaic, home to unique and threatened species. Invasive species, agricultural expansion, and unsustainable development exacerbate the problem.
What we do
We connect people to nature, fostering stewardship through:
- Programs that engage locals in biodiversity monitoring and habitat restoration.
- Partnering with schools, communities, and volunteers to restore degraded landscapes with tree planting and seed collection.
- Involving communities in tracking species and ecological health.
Impact
Over 500 students and residents engaged in hands-on conservation projects annually. Restored habitats contribute to water regulation, pollination, climate stability, and overall ecological balance that provide us with clean air and water.

4. Climate Change Adaptation
The challenge
Climate change is accelerating extreme weather events in Kodaikanal, from cyclones to unpredictable rainfall patterns. Yet, 54% of locals lack awareness of climate change and its causes, leaving them unprepared.
What we do
We educate and equip the community to tackle climate challenges head-on:
- Showcasing renewable energy, carbon sequestration, and nature-based solutions.
- Reaching schools, farmers, and residents with accessible, actionable climate change adaptation and disaster preparedness strategies.
- Promoting sustainable land use and enhanced vegetation cover to reduce climate impacts.
Impact
Climate action projects inspire local solutions while contributing to broader goals like net-zero emissions. CEH equips our community to become more resilient.
