Science & Technology at KIS
Despite its relative geographical isolation KIS has maintained a commitment to the highest standards of teaching, resource and facilities provision in the areas of science and technology.
For 30 years KIS external International Baccalaureate (IB), SAT results and KIS High School Diploma results in most subject areas have scored significantly above world and US means and reflect this commitment.
Science
KIS has 6 well equipped laboratories including one with specialist equipment for Biotechnology.
- All three traditional sciences (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) are offered to KIS Middle and High Schools
- Home Economics is offered at all grade levels, Elementary, Middle and High Schools through 3 food science laboratories with full kitchen facilities
Industrial Arts
KIS has a long established tradition of Applied Technology in the area of Materials Science, with a particular emphasis on woodworking.
- A woodworking classroom, workroom and conventional and machine tools are shared by students in a learning environment alongside KIS maintenance staff
Information Technology
Information Technology (IT) at KIS started in 1997 with 2 computers. Today KIS has 225 computers running on Windows XP and its priority position is evident.
- KIS has 5 recently refurbished computer labs with 210 computers running on Windows XP
- Each computer lab has 12-20 computers laid out in spacious clusters ensuring work station privacy
- Student internet use is supervised by a monitoring system and certain sites are blocked for their protection
- 5 servers supporting the network (firewall, file and printing, mail, database, web server)
- Broad band internet connection with 8Mbps speed
- Internet monitoring system to supervise student internet use with selective site blocking for student protection
- 450 student and staff laptops use the school network
KISNet
KIS has a very strong intranet (KISNet). Survey analysis of KISNet use shows that each student accesses KISNet at least twice a day for access to personal files which include account information, activity sheets, course information and schedules. Wireless networking is in a phased process of full site integration. New students can now also register for their courses online.
KIS IT Features
- KIS K-8 School has a refurbished computer labs with the latest computers complete with LCD monitors. Additionally each classroom has one computer
- KIS Middle and High Schools each have fully equipped dedicated computer labs
- Student dorms are supplied with computers for student work when computer labs are closed
- All KIS libraries are fully computerized

- 5 computers for displaying catalogue information, circulation monitoring and data entry

- 16 computers for internet access, circulation monitoring and CD-ROM use
- KIS has one dedicated staff computer laboratory for use at any time including weekends
KIS academic, administrative, maintenance and finance departments are all comprehensively supplied with computers for KISNet access and communication. KISNet induction is provided to new staff and students and its functionality during their respective orientation programs. KISNet provides for an online grading system, course material, question papers and relevant bookmarks to resources on the internet
KIS IT Academics & Communications
KIS High School and Middle School students make good use of their computer labs. Most assignments are done on computer and submitted electronically. Internet research is usually required for assignments and projects to develop proficiency and confidence.
As a residential school, KIS takes the responsibility of keeping the students in touch with their parents, friends and relatives very seriously. Each student is provided with a separate login ID and password so that they can access email at all times. This facility is also provided to the teachers and other staff members at KIS.
