Medical Care at KIS

KIS Dispensary - The "Dish"

KIS provides 24 hour health care services to students, staff and their families at the Dispensary (known as the ‘Dish') supported by fully qualified medical and nursing personnel.

The KIS school physician and family medicine specialist is assisted by three full time nursing staff and is supported by the nearby Van Allen hospital in Kodaikanal and the internationally renowned specialist hospitals of Vellore and Madurai if necessary.

The Dish is situated in a picturesque corner of the campus away from the noise and bustle of everyday school life. It has 20 beds for general ailments not requiring specialized treatment. The out patient wing caters for day to day outpatient requirements, minor procedures and minor surgeries. Laboratory and X ray facilities are provided by the local Van Allen hospital as needed.

KIS Medical Policy

The Dish averages about 400 - 600 visits each week. The vast majority are for minor ailments and injuries such as coughs, colds, sore throats, stomach upsets and minor strains and sprains. These are generally cared for symptomatically without the use of antibiotics or other stronger medication. Parents who prefer their children to use alternative medicines are requested to provide a special letter for the individual student file. These students will then be referred to particular practitioners as the need arises.

Routine health concerns are normally seen during specified clinic hours. After hour calls are reserved for significant medical issues.

Patient management is normally at the Dish. More serious conditions are referred to medical specialists as necessary. Every attempt is made to inform parents promptly of any illness / injury affecting their child. Parent participation is encouraged in any decisions regarding treatment options and choice of personal physicians.

Serious medical emergencies are rare amongst the student body. In this event, if immediate parent contact is not possible, urgent and necessary care will not be delayed. However, wherever possible, parent contact is always attempted before proceeding with immediate medical management.

Copies of all previous medical problems / interventions as well as up to date immunization records should be handed in at the Dispensary at the time of entry into KIS. Parents who wish to continue scheduled immunizations for their children need to officially advise medical personnel at the Dish. Parents of returning students are asked to inform the Dispensary of any medical treatment over the holidays and send all reports / diagnoses / recommendations and follow up care plan from any attending physicians.

The Dish asks to be advised of any regular medication or other recent treatment. Students are discouraged from keeping medication in the dorm for intermittent self-administration in order to minimize any possibility of misuse by the student or others and missed diagnoses by KIS medical staff.

Parents concerned about their child's health are requested to contact medical staff directly at the Dish. A vital part of any diagnosis is the patient history and input is valued from parents. Direct communication with KIS parents is both desirable and effective in medical areas.

KIS Doctor's quote:

We usually meet just about everybody through the Dish. Our prayer is that these visits will be more social than medical and that we all enjoy a safe, healthy and productive year at KIS.
