Libraries at KIS
KIS has 2 physical libraries; the K-8 Library and the HS Library (grades 9-12). Each library is individually resourced and staffed by a librarian with experienced support staff. The library website is the main starting place for any student and staff at KIS looking to verify information online, as well as searching the online catalogue of printed resources at KIS. The library website is enhanced by extensive use of Web 2.0 tools to promote the use of social media in a professional way.
The libraries at KIS are fully computerized with a web based library system for circulation of books and a modern opac that allows for user generated content, purchase suggestions and personal monitoring of checked out books. There are a number of internet connected computers in both libraries.
KIS has a commitment to regular review of library materials and annual updates of the collection. Teaching staff, students and librarians are all involved in the selection of library resources along with a purchasing model that allows all subject areas to update their respective collections in the libraries.
In support of KIS as a boarding school with a full residential program, KIS libraries and staff provide flexible opening hours to respond to varied student and staff needs. Librarians work closely with the academic staff and dorm parents to provide optimal student access to study and research facilities.
KIS libraries are spacious with over 950 square meters of combined space that generously allows for the libraries to be the students work place, as well as an area so enjoy reading, with significant collections of age appropriate books, reference materials, periodicals and access to online resources.
KIS Library Program
KIS has a whole school library policy which aims to:
- encourage and develop recreational reading
- ensure that students and staff are effective users of information
- ensure that students are able to conduct research and navigate through the massive flow of information available today and enhance their ability to validate resources and make proper use of them
The Head Librarian is an experienced Information Literacy teacher and is currently teaching all grade 10 and grade 12 students on how to do research for their Personal Projects and Extended Essays. Students and staff are also welcome to book individual research guiding sessions when needed.
