| Life at KIS
KIS is a boarding school. As such, KIS offers a full residential program built on the presumption that students learn from their whole experience in a community - in the classroom, on the playing fields, during activities and in the dorms out of school hours.
At KIS, students have well furbished dorms conducive to private study and a wealth of co-curricular activities through which to become involved.
Dorm Life
In many ways the dormitory or 'dorm' is the nerve center of student life. KIS puts a lot of effort, time and energy trying to make dorms "a home away from home." KIS has 18 dormitories:
- 6 dorms for High School boys
- 7 dorms for High School girls
- 3 Middle School dorms (one shared by MS and HS boys) and
- 2 dorms for Elementary School children
Boys dorms are off-campus but within a short walking distance from the main campus. Girls dorms are all situated on the main campus except one HS girls’ dorm on the Loch End campus just over the road from the Main School campus. Each dorm has approximately 25 to 35 students and each room provides for 2 - 4 students. Dorms are well-equipped with a kitchenette, an indoor recreational area with a range of reading materials and assorted games, television, telephone, computers and wireless internet connection. Most dorms have an outside court area as well. Laundry services, evening snacks and dorm treats are provided in each dorm.
KIS dorms are friendly and comfortable, a home away from home. Dedicated dorm parents reside in an apartment within each dorm and continually interact with students, providing a caring, listening ear and sound advice, supervising study times and room cleanliness and encouraging individual spiritual development. A common code of lifestyle expectations helps students develop self-discipline and responsibility. Dorm parents are responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of their dorms.
In addition to the dorm parents, the school Counselor and Chaplain are available to students for counseling and pastoral care when needed. As well, all students whether day or boarding, belong to an advisor group led by a professional staff member who is responsible for the welfare and academic progress of their advisees. All the dorms and dorm parents are overseen by the Dean of Students who communicates consistently with the students, their parents and dorm parents.
Students have opportunities to interact with each other in optional activities and during free time over the weekend. A wide range of planned leisure activities are offered out of school hours and include sports, camping, hiking, music, drama and multiple clubs. Relationships made within dorms sustain students throughout their time at school and remain strong long after students leave KIS. |
