Student Leadership at KIS

KIS takes the responsibility of developing leaders of the future seriously. For over 105 years students have been given a role in defining the school culture and in extending their individual skills into peer leadership areas through programs in social experience, cultural field trips, community service and outdoor education.

KIS also continues its membership of international bodies which focus on student leadership development such as Model United Nations, Global Youth Conference, the US based National Honor Society (NHS) and National Association of Student Councils (NASC).

Student government is one way for students to get involved at KIS and represent the voices of fellow students. The major instruments of KIS student government are the Middle School Student Council (MIDCO) and the High School Student Council (STUDCO). Both student councils are headed by elected Presidents and aided by other elected officers. All classes in the Middle School and High School elect representatives to the student councils.

Two student "observers" are elected to attend the meetings of the KIS Association governing body, the Council of Directors. Students are also represented on advisory committees such as the Disciplinary Consultation, Academic Affairs and Residential Life committees.

National Honor Society (NHS)

  • Established in 1921
  • KIS membership since 1963

The National Junior Honor Society (NJHS)

  • Established in 1929

The National Honor Society (NHS) and National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) are premier US organizations established to recognize outstanding High School and Middle School level students. More than just an honor roll, NHS and NJHS serve to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character (and citizenship for NJHS). These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since their beginnings in 1921 and 1929.

Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in activities of the NHS and NJHS. NHS and NJHS chapters are found throughout the world. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.

The National Association of Student Councils (NASC)

Since 1931 the goal of NASC has been to help all student councils become more effective organizations. NASC represents Middle School level and High School councils within the US and all student councils worldwide who are affiliated with NASC. It seeks to provide a valuable leadership partnership between students and their school. It creates the opportunity for students to become effective leaders, thus encouraging and influencing a positive school climate.

The operation and administration of NASC is done at the national office in Reston, Virginia, USA. The NASC Executive Board members determine policy, evaluate procedures and programs, are resources for the membership and staff and are national advocates for the association. The policies they set are the essence of NASC and what it believes, what it stands for, what and how it values and believes.
